Tripura constructed first-of -its kind road using plastic waste. This initiative is taken to control plastic pollution and make the environment plastic-free. On the occasion of the inauguration of this road, Tripura’s Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb informed that this is the first road in Tripura that is made from plastic waste. To construct this road, waste plastic was collected and recycled and used constructing 680 meters long road near Women’s College, Agartala.
He also said that such initiatives can set an example for everyone that how plastic waste can be utilised and used in public welfare projects. This not only helps in reducing waste but also help in environment conservation. District Magistrate of West Tripura District who was also present there said that this construction of the road was one such trial and if it becomes successful, then more such roads will be constructed.
He also added that plastic great when is it used but when it becomes waste, it is a menace and hazardous for the environment. Plastic in the form of waste start damaging the ecosystem and its habitats and also a great concern for scientists across the world. He also informed that such road constructed with bitumen can show a great impact during the rainy season, especially in places where water logging is a regular phenomenon. Agartala municipal corporation generates around 19 tonnes of plastic waste and such initiatives can help authorities to do proper waste management of plastic. However, it might be the first such road in Tripura but the central government has utilised plastic waste in the construction of roads across the country. More than 1 lakh km of road in 11 states has been constructed using plastic waste and more such construction is in the pipeline.
